These past 3 weeks, I had the opportunity to volunteer residentially at a state park. The experience was challenging but beyond valuable. Life consisted of no access to the internet and living just with nature and friends. Within these past few weeks we were able to accomplish building two picnic pads, maintain trails/invasive plants, restore bridges, rebuild wooden gates, create fish habitats, build picnic benches, and visit other state parks. With the help of park rangers and crew leaders, I got to learn so much about the environment through interpretive programs alongside some people who became my closest friends in just 3 weeks. I’ve always loved visiting parks and admiring nature, but this experience has taught me to appreciate parks even more. There are always hard working staff behind it all ensuring safety and enjoyment (I firsthand got to see some of the most hardworking and genuine park rangers). Being able to fulfill my passion of helping the environment was an experience I am so grateful for. This Youth Conservation Corps program taught me about bats, lake fish, the history of parks, invasive plants, rocks/minerals, insects, forest animals, and even caves. For high school students looking for an opportunity to immerse themselves in an experience such as this, consider applying for the youth conservation corps next summer. Below are some images from the experience!
